INGREDIENTS 
makes 8 cups
6 extra-large eggs
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 cups half-and-half
2 cups milk
½ cup brandy
¼ cup light rum
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups heavy cream freshly grated nutmeg
METHOD
1. Beat the eggs with an electric mixer on medium speed until thick and a lemon color; gradually add ½ cup of the sugar, beating well.
2. Put the half-and-half and milk into a large saucepan over medium–low heat and heat until thoroughly hot but not boiling. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, stirring with a wire whisk. Transfer the mixture back to the large saucepan and cook over medium–low heat, stirring continuously with a wire whisk until hot but not boiling. Remove from heat and let cool. Stir in the brandy, rum, and vanilla with a wire whisk. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.
3. Just before serving, beat the heavy cream and the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Pour the chilled eggnog mixture into a large punch bowl. Gently fold the whipped cream into the eggnog mixture just until combined. Decorate each serving with freshly grated nutmeg. Serve immediately.
