App: The Snow Ball

Here’s a cute little app that just came out – The Snow Ball, based on the board book.

The preschool book app is for the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab devices and features polar bears enjoying their own snow day. There is some interactive animation (bears sledding, snowflakes falling) and rhyming text and music on each page.

“Little polar bears all covered in fluff with scarves and mittens and little earmuffs”

Snow Ball readers can choose from read-to-me or read-by-myself modes. There’s also a game called Penguin Attack where readers can help the book’s characters past some pesky penguins to the Snow Ball celebration.

Overall: It took me a couple of plays to understand the game. And to be honest, it’s a little tricky to get them into the Snow Ball store. The story is good for little ones so I’ll overlook the game part.

The author is David Steinberg, who was an artist, producer and executive on such animated features as Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time, Meet the Robinsons, and Gnomeo & Juliet,. This app is dedicated to the memory of the book’s acclaimed illustrator, Liz Conrad. A portion of all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Price is $1.99.
